If you're the next coming of Maradona, it's a possibility.

2
Yes very much so. But more realistically if you are in the big soccer countries like Spain, England, or Italy, ect. Americans sadly think of soccer as a joke which pains me to say because its my favorite sport.

3
Well there are a LOT of amazing high school soccer players out there, and you have to stand out better then a needle in a haystack. Your in high school yes? The chances are pretty slim that out of everyone you will get chosen and make it big. What might help though is if you put up some videos on youtube of you, show us something special and why you are unique. Get your name out there you know?

4
America doesn't work that way. Although it's possible, it's not probable at all. Going pro from high school in America works like this.. You have to, and I mean have to, be on a club team at the highest level or play in the developmental academy here. Playing there you then have to be one of the best and when you're in that group you then can think about going pro. I hope Freddy Adu rings a bell too.

Are people asked what race they are on job applications to deny them a job if they are a member of a minority?

Are people asked what race they are on job applications to deny them a job if they are a member of a minority?
Are people asked what race they are on job applications to deny them a job if they are a member of a minority group like black or hispanic? Hello my name is Alex and im from a town outside of Detroit named Inkster, Michigan. I am a 22 year old black man I will be 23 years old in 3 weeks from now. I live at home with my mom because I am unemployed and even if I could get get a job it would have to pay a decent salary for me to get my own place. I am unemployed and to this day cannot find a job. The last job I had was a seasonal job during the christmas holiday of the year of 2006. I have not had a job in over 3 and a half years and still cant find one. Every place I apply at whether it is in person or online I never get a reply or phone call from every single place I apply at. So one day I thought that maybe the reason why all of these places I apply at refuse to hire me is discrimination, because I remeber every online job application I filled out the asked me what race I was. So I finally made up my mind that from now on whenever I fill out a job application I will never answer a question where I am asked what race I am, I will either leave that question blank or check I would rather not reply. I was attending college but I am going to go to a broadcasting school this coming fall in August to learn how to work on the radio like be a disc jockey or commercial announcer or board operater and learn how to do many other tasks at a radio station. When I just last attended college I was studying computer information systems but I found out that I could get my experience quicker to be a radio dj in just 8 months compared to a 4 year degree aka bachelor degree which is required for people likew me studying computer information systems, so thats what really made me switch schools to Specs Howard School near Detroit, Michigan. The school I am going to is named Specs Howard School of Media Arts, which is located 16 miles from my house in Southfield, Michigan. Specs Howard School teaches people like me who want to work in the radio industry different skills we need to know to operate a radio station, and what is played over the air on the radio. So my question for all of you is if im asked what race I am on a online job application for a large chain of retail stores or fast food resturants or any where else, is that used against me to deny me a job because im black?

leave it blank lol

2
Not necessarily because you are black. This happens to whites as well. Hispanics have hiring priority right now. I've actually filled out applications that only asked if you were Hispanic or not. And of course I didn't hear back from them.

How can i get any kind of first job, more details inside?
I am 18 years old and never had a job because my mom never let me because of school (even though I was doing good) and my safety. I am African American and I have no job experience, there is no longer an afirmative action, and because of the economy it is not many jobs, I have filled out many apps online since gas prices are high and have limited transportation. What jobs besides army jobs should I look into? I live in Detroit, Michigan and right by Dearborn, Michigan.

Just an idea, but do you have a lawn mower and an edger ? You can do yard work and clean-up for people very cheap. You aren't working anyway. If people see that you have a good work ethic, they often network you in to something. When I ran construction crews, someone was always recommending some young person that was a good worker, willing to learn. Service jobs are those most sought after, because few want to do anything physical. But, a good plumber can make a bomb every year, and so can a good mechanic.

How long would it take me to earn a ph.D in dietetics and nutrition?
I'm a junior in high school right now. I plan on majoring in dietetics in order to become a dietitian and I will probably attend Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. After becoming RD certified, I am not sure whether or not I want to pursue a graduate degree. How long would it take to earn a master's or ph.D in dietetics? And will the extra education be worth it in the long run?

A Master's degree usually takes one or two years after a BS. There is no set time limit for a PhD. Very few people do it in less than four years after a bachelor's degree -- and some take seven or eight years. PhD students usually take three years of classes, take a written exam at the end of the second year & an oral exam at the end of the third. Then they start writing a dissertation. I started mine in my third year & took 18 months to finish it. I know people who took years. Once the dissertation is done, your committee has to sign off on it. This is usually done at the Dissertation Defense.

How many of you guys have had gang trouble when you were young (below age 21) or maybe still have gang trouble?
My family moved to the ghettos of Detroit, Michigan when I was 13, to attend high school. I did pretty terrible things with my gang like vandalize, steal, and even mugged somebody once. I spent some time in juvenile hall and finally was disciplined before I finished high school. Would anybody like to share experiences?

I was in a gang.. sort of in my old town. We moved to a small/midsize town in Texas (always lived in Texas and proud to be Southern), and I got into a group of friends that eventually made a redneck gang. I'll admit we were pretty racist, we were like a mini- KKK, without the robes and complicated crap. The gang got pretty damn big, and my friends were the heads of the gang. I was one of the people working for the head, telling all the lower guys what to do, but we f---ed some stuff up big time. We'd smash up N-ggerfied cars and anytime we'd hear rap music we'd blast country and try to piss the black dude off enough to where he wanted to fight. Then we'd all jump him and steal a bunch of his crap. But I'm done with it now, I'm off in the military and they set me straight haha

6
I was in a gang from 9 to 16 years old. I was kinda recruited. One day i was walking home from school and 3 middle school kids ran up on me(i was decked out polo shirt/gold watch/my chain on/Jordan's) they started hassling me for to give up my sh** and surprise we started fighting so i ran away at first to the fence of a baseball field then i put my back 2 the fence and started swinging; it lasted for about a 1 min a 1min 1/2 but then one of the kids oldest brother came and told them to stop n that was that i got respect from everyone after that and those kids became my homeboys and the four of us later became baby gangsters a few months later. But i ended up dropping the gang life I don't know why till this day why i gave it up but i decided i was out an i asked to be jumped out and boom went through 2 sets of five minute beatings from my fellow members n now i'm hopefully on my way to dallas to go to art school this coming spring.

There is a shortage in Detroit for teachers with special certifications such as science, math, special ed, and foreign language skills. But the Detroit Public Schools are in serious financial crisis and the system is losing thousands of students each year. You can check out all available job openings with them at the link below.

Michigan Veterans in need of FREE legal advice?
Law school to give free legal help to veterans DETROIT -- The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law will offer free legal assistance to veterans across Michigan. Lawyers and students plan to offer services from a recreational vehicle converted into a mobile law office. They plan to begin traveling throughout the state this summer. "It's sort of an `If we build it, they will come' approach," said David Koelsch, director of the law school's Immigration Law Clinic. Law school dean Mark Gordon said the mobile clinic is needed to serve increasing numbers of veterans returning from Iraq. "They served our country. They protected our freedoms," first-year student Anthony Mosko told the Detroit Free Press for a Saturday story. "As law students and as an institution of legal study, it's the least we can do," added the 24-year-old Cincinnati resident, who plans to help with the veterans clinic. {spread the word}

Well I applaud you on wanting to better yourself. I wish you the best luck in your travels. I have found that personal stories at the beginning really get an audience listening. I will just give an excerpt from an essay in a college english class which left me crying. "I haven't always had the best things in life. My father was arrested when I was six because he sold drugs to an uncover officer. He did this because he was trying to make money to put food on the table for his 2 children. My brother was shot and killed when I was sixteen because he ran from the police trying to serve a drug-related warrant. Those life lessons in my life taught me that drugs will never get you anywhere. Mostly though, I am grateful I was given up for adoption by my mother so I could be here in this room today. I am here to ensure that none of my future families will ever have to sell drugs to support their families." You could start off my saying that you haven't always had the best things and that Cass Technical High School would allow you to become a better person and contribute positively to society. Something like that. If you need more help, just e-mail me: sexisoftballchick92@yahoo.com

My daughter is autistic and won't behave in the ?

My daughter is autistic and won't behave in the ?
classroom. They have kicked her out of 2 schools already because of her behavior. She is a good girl all day then at the end of the day she gets agitated and gets a little physical. I'm at my wits end as to how to get help for her. She is a loving , sweet girl just need help and i don't think the school system in Detroit is equipped to handle her situation. How can I get home schooling for her? I live in Detroit, Michigan. Thank you.

First of all, I really feel for you but more importantly, your daughter. The school system in general needs a major overhaul - and not just in Michigan. Unfortunately most schools are not equipped for special needs children. Most teachers have their hands full just trying to teach. I would suggest calling or visiting your Board of Education and check on your alternatives. Home schooling may end up being your best bet but I would check out other things first. Not knowing your financial situation, I don't want to steer your toward a private school but it could be one option. Good luck to you!

2
In Australia a child with special needs such as your daughter would be allocated a teachers aid to assist her with her learning and social interaction. Perhaps there is a school that specializes in assimilating special needs students into the mainstream curriculum and/or offers such a service. It could also be that a full day at school is too much for her at this point. Best of luck.

3
I don't really know about home schooling, but I know that if your child is identified as having a disability through an IEP and her behavior is a result of her disability then she is entitled to all types of protection and support for her behavior problem. It is actually illegal to kick her out of school or to suspend her for that matter if her behavior is a result of a disability. Request in writing a Functional Analysis Assessment and a Behavior Support Plan done by a qualified behaviorist to assist your daughter with her behavior challenges. If she has been suspended or held out of school for more than 10 days she is entitled to a manifestation determination which states whether or not the behavior is a result of her disability and if it is they can no longer exclude her or suspend her or kick her out from school. It sounds to me like they have some major violations. If you look on a copy of your parent rights that they are suppose to provide you at least annually there should be advocacy or other organizations that can help you get what your child is entitled to. Also www.wrightslaw.com is full of good information look under discipline.

4
Most times it is easier for the schools to kick the child out or try and make the parents pull the child out. I know that PAVE and Parent to Parent have been real good resources for me when I was battling my son’s schools. I am not too familiar with the laws of Detroit however; I can tell you how I found out the laws where I am. Being at the beginning I was not too familiar with them either. When my first child was diagnosed with Severe Asperger Syndrome, I asked what was it they looked at me and asked if I had internet. So, I researched every question I had. Do searches on “Autism, IEP, and Laws in the state of Detroit” you will have to wade through some and see what ones help you. Also if you go to wrightslaw.com you will be able to find out good information. What I did is I researched any question I might have about what the school had or did. I always brought a friend or family member with me that would help me keep my cool, you always want to keep your cool when dealing with administration. If talking to the teacher didn’t work I went above, went to the principal, and then district office. I have even contacted the state super attendant. I have spent many hours in the library and I ask questions. We are not there to make friends with our child’s school however we can be friendly and advocate. There is also the American Disability Association. I had help from advocates, my child’s psychiatrists, and psychologists as well as his pediatrician. Start a buddy system, surely there is some near you in the same district that has a child with Autism or on the spectrum. Do not fear the school. You as a parent have the right to further this. Write letters to the newspaper, contact the newspaper, and the local news channels. You need to get it out there that in haste the schools kicked you’re your child who has Autism, No child left behind; does not mean they can kick your child out. They need to have trained professionals who know how to work and handle Autism in their schools. Make a list of things that upset your child Then make a list of things that help calm your child (One that helps my two with autism is brush therapy, joint compressions, swaddled in a blanket, and quiet place to desensitize) Making a list of things that help you with your child at home; go over it with your child’s doctors and specialists and bring this up to the school. If it is book, or something that comforts your child it can be written into the IEP to have it or some substitute. Also, when researching see what other families have done, maybe see if there is an autism support group in our area Go to wright’s law, Oasis online resources for Autism, (search autism resources) Stand firm ground!! Remember to always take notes and keep a journal of what is going on at the schools and who you spoke to and when. This is vital whenever you have a meeting and you need to discuss a situation you have it there in front of you.

5
They can't not provide an education. That's illegal. And they have to realize that it isn't that she won't behave at the end of the day, she can't. They should be making a plan to deal with this. See if there is an organization for parents of autistic kids in your community. They should be able to help you navigate the system and, if necessary, find legal help.

6
the school MUST meet her needs..they must find a way to equip themselves do you have an IEP or 504? there shoudl be a behavior specialist involved--the shoudl create a behavior support plan Occupational therapy would probably help--the school should be providing this.. a possibility is even to have her on a shortened school day...she could leave early every day and teh school can send a teacher to your home for teh subjects she misses

Would I be able to Attend University of Detroit Mercy or Michigan State?
So far my grade point average is well, average is about a 3.3 - 3.7, and i do have a lot of extra circular activities that i do such as Tennis (Varsity), Wrestling (Varsity), also I manage the Girls Tennis Team. But my downturn is the ACT score.. I got a 16. So I was wondering what should i do? Re-take? If so any sites for practice and so on? Is there anything else I could do to make the school considering accepting me? Even with the low ACT score.... Thank You, Any help would be great-full.

You should re-take it. How about considering to take SAT? You might do better since there is no science section. Send me an email and we can try to work something out soon to bring you a score that you can aim for. You should not solely aim for "admission" for the colleges. You should aim for scores that will get you in AND provide good scholarships. Remember, you're not going to the college for just a year; four years...

Take Korean classes in Michigan?

Take Korean classes in Michigan?
I was wondering at the age of fourteen is there any schools in Michigan [ near the Detroit area] where I can take Korean classes? I'm really interested in learning the language and it's extremely hard trying to learn it by myself. If you don't know, don't answer. Thanks. Also if it turns out that there isn't anywhere to go where is a good place to start learning? After learning the alphabet.

Here is what I would do if I were you. First off look and see if there are any Korean communities in your area. Sometimes they are hard to find but you should ask around to see where they live. Then look into their community centers see if they have any classes to teach Koreans english, sometimes you can find in those places people willing to teach you Korean in exchange they can practice their English skills with you. Also look into any colleges in your area that may be teaching Korean. They may take you as a student if you're only taking one class, but sometimes your grades may play a part in it. But ask around hopefully you have your parents support in this. My best friends little sister is 15 and she is taking classes at our local community college and is still in high school. Sometimes the community colleges will team up with high school students interested in a certain field. If none of this works out for you there are plenty of software you could use to learn Korean. Best of luck to you!

Even if you don't do something wrong the just make up some rule or say it implies to some bogus rule. I once got a detention because I was walking down the hallway and didn't stop and pick a piece of trash up in front of someone Else's locker.

17
public school, lots of drama!

18
public school, many many many bitches and bastards go there. um my school is 104 years old, the bathrooms are icky!!!!!!!!!! we have so many students that there's a combined first and second grade and fifth and sixth are stuck in the modulars and like there and like lots of stuff

19
Boring, normal... I think I'll pull a prank...

20
Basically, it SUCKS.

21
it is a top rated public school with rich students small only 700 students in high school like1000 students in both elm and high fancyish. fancy library air conditioned most teachers say the school is good to work at and if you get a job there you r lucky. good sports teams and clubs and classes other schools don't have. Lake George NY

22
Whoa, your school has a lot of drama! My school is just plain and typical. It gets kind of boring after a while.

23
My school is new (only its 2nd year) and its the best and nicest school you can go to..! We have the greatest cafeteria, that serves pizza and sandwiches and just baked cookies and those big pretzels along with chips and soda and even ice-cream (no lies). The auditoriom is great too, its like we have our own movie theater. We also have a great library, and tech room, and computer room, and freen room , two art rooms, etc. We have three gyms too! Either way my school is great!! :]

24
How is your school still running? My school is boring. It's a public school although there's only a little bit of drama here and there. But everyone gets along. :] It's nice.

25
Dude...Detroit is rough. haha I lived there for a while. Detroit is for tough people haha...And Im not very tough. xD I know live in a VERY small town in PA. My town only has about 500 residents. And I have to go to school in another town about 20 minutes away, and its a very small school. Deffinatly not like the ones in the city. My class is the biggest, and we only have 97 people. Everyone knows everyone, things get around fast.. But its an okay place. ;D I like it. Its cozy. haha I know all the people in my class pretty well, and Id hate to leave them. All I can tell you for Detroit life is, Keep The Faith. haha My uncle told me that a while ago when I still lived there..And I was crying one day cause I got into a fight..And he told me to Keep The Faith. Its like a special little life quote I live by now. ;D

26
wow your school is bad the most rebellious thing my school does is set the fire alarm and they dont even do that alot

27
My school is truly a pathetic excuse for an educational institutionn.

28
I go to a school in the UK - we wear uniforms -Loads of fights -Teachers get chairs thrown at them. -Children smoking weed and in the Uk we say Year not Grade haha a little bit different to The americans. Have a great day/night. what ever time it is where u live :} PEACE

29
druggggies!

30
my school sucks. it's boring. lots of bullying. is strip searching even legal?

31
its stupid and f u c k e d up. they get the wrong people in trouble allll thhhee timeee. whats yours like?

32
My school is well, has to many rules, but I'm sure every school does. We wear uniform, we have a dress code for the uniforms, we cannot dye our hair colors that "Distract Students", we cant write on ourselves, no technology devices, yeah ect. But our school looks pretty nice, but it's hell for me I feel like I'm locked in a prison cell. We barely learn anything we are always getting lectures and crap. There are a lot of proctors, and the vice principal has this God Complex. We have way to many cliques, and I hang out with stoners, but don't do anything. I love my friends, and I hate my school. There are two pregnant girls at school, and at least 4 girls that faked there pregnancy, to stay with a guy.

33
I used to go to a school...200 kids. THAT was too much for me, I do online schooling now. Hold up champ, i pity you for your source of...ahem..school.

34
mine is like..... i wake up whenever i want stay in my pjs sit in front of the computer work on my online classes O_o BORING!!

35
Mine is public; infested with evil little rats running around spreading rumors. Cruel teachers who only work to get paid, and spend endless hours on the Internet. The worst part of it all is gym class. The gym teacher watches us get undressed in the locker rooms. It's gross. She watches me get bullied for not being able to dribble a basketball or not being able to do play sports very well and she doesn't do anything about it. I told my principal, and she didn't do anything. Silly stereotypes, racism, fights, kids doing drugs. If you look hard enough, however, there are a few good people who won't judge you on how you look or how popular you are.

36
A vamp school? You dont want to know...

37
wow! i just started this year going to some dumb country school in dallas. its boring, the only excitement is little gay fights that only happened 3 times this whole year. alot of racism. we have to wear uniforms with shirts tucked in and a belt with no hoodie or we get detention or sometimes saturday school. nobody even talks or gets in trouble just the mexicans lol but soon they get expelled or somethin. my previous school in san antonio sounds a little like urs except w/o the searches and fires and being on the news.. that school is actually closing down next year.

38
My school is dull and boring, but the curriculum (what they teach) is pretty good... The building itself is ancient... (no air conditioners!) ...and it feels like a prison too! Crowded, narrow hallways, gray walls, dim lights, ew. We don't do strip searches, but there was this one time I heard of when the police brought dogs in to sniff out for drugs. And the only metal detectors or any detectors we have are the ones in the library so that the staff knows if someone is trying to steal a book or two... As for the students... well we have "rich" snobby preps, the "gangsta" people, jocks, punks/emo here and there, a lot Twilight fans, and the normal kids... Although most of the girls here will end up as strippers or hideous soccer moms... Yeah... that's pretty much it.

39
well mine is public and is a hell hole with guys that are probably gonna be future rapists.

What would be the best Law School to attend to be a Sports Lawyer?

What would be the best Law School to attend to be a Sports Lawyer?
I want to become a Sports Lawyer. But I don't know which school would be the best option for me to break into the industry. Ultimately I want to practice either in Phoenix, Detroit, Chicago, or Los Angeles. I was thinking about attending one of these schools: UCLA, USC, Loyola in Los Angeles, Tulane, Marquette, University of Michigan, Duke, University of Miami, Vanderbilt, Arizona State, Washington & Lee, California Western, or University of Arizona Law School. Which one do you think will help me? Thanks

Whats a Good Online Homeschool Program in Detroit Michigan?
I am currently a sophomore in High School. School has started on September 7th 2010, like 3 days of school has passed that I haven't went yet. I am planning on going to Homeschool. The only problem is, is that I don't know whats a good HomeSchooling Program for a 10th Grader. It has to be online, and I'm not ready to put up with the High School Crap in my current school, the kid's over there act so childish and annoying, it's pitiful. Also leave me a price of the Homeschool program, and also let me know if it's a good Home Schooling Program, and easy to Sign Up. I am noob with this homeschool thing, so I'm like a cave man with fire. Also leave the price and a phone number of it, Thanks!! I really appreciate it!

I did K12 online, which is free, and it's an excellent program as far as teacher-student time, "classroom" time, and daily schoolwork. I liked it a lot. You gotta do the work every day though. I'll give you the links. Good luck with your studies.

Why is Michigan the basket case of the USA?

Why is Michigan the basket case of the USA?
Is it because the unions own the state? Is it because Granholm is the most incompetent governor in the country? Is it because corruption is a way of life here (see Detroit city council, mayor, school system, etc)? Should we simply blame the Lions for stinking up the place for 50 plus years?? What are your thoughts?

I always thought the whole USA was a big basket case.

2
I never really thought about it before, but yeah, I think you are absolutely correct. It's the Detroit Lions fault.

3
Free trade. Thank conservatives who care more about saving 10 cents on a bobble head than their fellow American.

4
Unions are the major players here.

5
It is ran by unions and tax and spend Dems

6
I do not feel it is in the basket at all, but to blame the Lions is just cruel they have enough problems already

7
Unions=corruption. Sheesh? Watch movies. This is one aspect the liberal entertainment industry is not smart enough to keep a lid on--plus it sells.

8
Being a Michigan resident I would have to say Grandholm by a mile. But then again what would one expect from a person growing up in Canada and learning the Canadian way instead of the American way. Her ONLY policy seems to be hike those taxes, on individuals, on business's, on consumer goods............by doing so, many companies have LEFT the State, as well as our young College Graduates since the business climate is dire. The crumbling of the automakers and its unions just broke the camels back, as this State has been in trouble for a long while. Grandholm seems to wait until the very last minute, threatening us citizens by threatening to cut back on the police and the schools.................when all that needs to be done is reign in the forever growing Government. I would love to see "part time" representatives in this State. I would also like to see the revamping of all Gov't/Education/Police/Fire Dept retirements and health care take a different route than we taxpayers footing the bill.

9
yes yes and yes, its all the democrates, and if you noticed all the liberal democrates are the same and they do the same everywhere they go, look at any blue state and see if its not the same, michigan is ground zero and its spreading outwards to a blue state near you.

Information on the Springwells / Delray Area in Detroit?

Information on the Springwells / Delray Area in Detroit?
I'm looking for information on housing, school systems, demographics etc. in Detroit, Michigan. Specifically around Central Avenue and DIX Street. From what I've heard, its impoverished and unsafe. I'm now looking for peoples' more personal experiences with this. What was it like growing up / raising kids there? How do you think you could have benefitted from being in another part of the country? I'm curious because I was born there and placed for adoption when I was one year old. I now live in NYC, but I'm curious as to what my life would have been like. If there's anything you feel is important to add that I didn't think to ask, please do! Thanks everyone.

Mary, Much of this depends on your age as that the are changed. I grew up in the central/Dix/Vernor area, in the sixities and seventies. I attended a catholic school ST. Gabes, both myself and my wife graduated from Redeemer H.S. The public schools at this time were what you made of it, many of my friends went to college from both schools. This area of SW Detroit is basically a community within Detroit, which no matter which block people felt a sence of community. This changed as the area became more poorer and people moved however thhere to this day remainds a sence of community. The area now is mostly Mexican and Latin many resturants but also more crime drugs ect. for you i think you would of made friends with people who had many extended family members from commnity, you would of met many people fro various backgrounds employment ranges, you would of experienced the changes of this area. I would like to tell you more but I need some time references. I also hope all is well I have fiends that were adopted and have especially worked on staying close in there adult life, you woderment is normal. Have you had any ontact with your natural Parents? I would ask about a typical day, school church, transportation size of homes commerece, colleges and what a similier female would o accomplished. also google church names to get a history. Warmly Jon Luc

It is a very impoverished place. I have done some work at a clubhouse there for people with mental health problems. I have to park across the street and I am very cautious. I leave nothing of value in my car, and I don't leave my car if I see anyone about. I hate that I feel this way when I go there, but it feels unsafe to me. There are no grocery stores or stores of any kind except the little mom & pop stores that sell liquor, cigarettes, and overpriced food. There are lots of people wandering about the area that look homeless since they are pushing shopping carts of their belongings. There is very little that is attractive - the houses are not kept up, there is very little in the way of grass or flowers - lots of dirt and broken cement. My best guess is that your mother and possibly your father were having a very hard life and wanted something better for you. I am guessing that they gave you up out of love and a sincere hope that your life would be better because of it.

This is considered Southwest Detroit, in and before the 80's SW Detroit was a decent enough place to live, people still did take care of their homes...as time went on it steadily declined. Central and Dix is just blah, its over runned by gangs...The detroit school system is awful. I remember as a kid growing up in the 80's the bar was set very low in the schools. As most of Detroit has become very unsafe. Its a place were you really cannot trust your neighbor. Delray isnt a part of Central and Dix...is more so past Fort and Springwells, its a depressing little shack of town that even in the early 90's was looked down on as dangerous and ghetto.

Detroit is a very cultural place, but it's a dying city in fact. The crime is going up, the Big 3 auto companies are going down, and population is gradually decreasing. The city is dying but still staying strong. Detroit is a great place but in the right spots of Detroit. There is no crime in some of the nicer parts of Detroit and in some of the Suburbs but once you get into the city it's a lot of crime indeed. The bad parts of Detroit are currently ranked 6 in the nation on crime out of 25 cities (as of 2007). Overall in the right spots you won't get as much crime as you do in the city. I didn't live there as a kid growing up and I currently don't live there but I would make a lot of visits and I had family there growing up. If I did live there probably, I would have grown up very fond of staying alert of the streets and where I would have been when I was younger, because of the crime but I would have also learned about cultural difference in places like Detroit and accepted more diverse of crowds of people. Overall, I think if I did live there it would have been no different from how I was raised but probably more strict on what I could do alone because of the crime rate. Schooling is good in Detroit, and there is a lot of public schools so I think I would've gotten a decent education. Although Detroit is slowly dying, it's still a very nice and cultural place but it needs a lot of work to get it started back up again.

Can the state of Michigan take over the City Of Detroit?

Can the state of Michigan take over the City Of Detroit?
Only Michigan residents, you don't have to live in the city, you can live anywhere in Michigan. With all that has happened and is happening to Detroit should the state take over for the city's own good? I'm a 20 year old resident and it kills me to see my hometown like this, the neighborhood I lived in on the westside is no longer recognizable from what it once was. The schol system is in shambles, with the exception of a few good schools. The city is in need of police officers, people we only have 1800 officers for a city of 900+. Am I the only one that see's something wrong with that? Sure the downtown is the "crystal ball" of SE michigan, with its entertainment and sporting events. The city goverenment have proven to the entire state that they would incapable of running a pre-school class properly. I mean its just sick, whenever I go to school (EMU) people ask me where I'm from, and I say Detroit, then they atomactically assume Im from the "HOOD" like thats cool or something...What will it take for the city t wake up from its slumber of 40 odd years? can the residents, such as myself (for the time being) save the city? or should the state step in like they dare trying to do with Pontiac? Please explain your reason? 900+ = 900,000+ I left that out

okay, so I'm not from there but my mum is. Detroit/Michigan is a second home to me and I agree with you. I hate seeing it like it is. People ask 'where's your mum from she has a different accent' and I say 'detroit' and the totally think that she's from this crazy bad place. I think that more officers are needed first of all, the state should start working with that and if more help is needed then to step in fully.

2
First of all: Back about 15 years ago, there was a new class at the police academy every few months (even with the residency requirement). That changed drastically when Our Esteemed Leader decided to be a short-sighted j@ack@ss, funneling money away from the civil services sector (fire, as well as police). And it only got worse with his reelection. There hasn't been a new class at the academy in years, I believe (don't quote me on that one, but I do know it's dropped to next-to-nothing) - instead, there have been layoffs and precinct closures (I've never understood how that makes sense!). Now, the cops who are left are working their tails off trying to cover the whole city. They're working double and triple overtime, and have for quite a while now. Any first grader can tell you that's absolutely ridiculous and unsafe - just asking for disaster. *knock on wood* ...That rant's over... Second: It's hard to institute good changes when a majority of residents/voters have a "poor me. why should I bother? it's going to happen anyway" attitude, instead of trying to help turn the place around. Look at the last election - there was barely any turnout, because too many people thought "it's a done deal, my vote doesn't matter". The city needs more people like you to get together, step up, and get others to face reality/take control of the situation - but legally. I'm not saying there should be a mutiny or another riot, but something's gotta give. I just hope it changes for good. Third: I don't know the legalities. Can the state take over? Would you want Jenny From the Block to take over, anyway? She has the magic touch of turning everything to cr@p. (I wouldn't trust that woman to take over ditch digging detail, even.) Great civic-minded question. Star for you.

3
That wouldn't be a bad idea if Granholm was NOT in office. Other then that I don't see her being any more competent than Kwamie and Coleman.

4
Maybe.  But as another poster said, Two-Penny Jenny wouldn't be much of an improvement.I get depressed when I see what's been happening to the city, especially since 1973 when Coleman Young  got elected mayor.  But for crying out loud, why are the City Council members elected at large, instead of by wards as happens in almost every other city on the planet?  It can't be healthy to have the entire council living on the same block when there are neighborhoods that haven't had working streetlights since the riot. Can this be true?  I've heard that if all the vacant land in Detroit were one parcel, it would be big enough to take in three cities the size of San Francisco. Damn, it's hard to believe that the D was once the most important city in the world.I'd like to stick around and chat some more, but I have a campaign to plan.

5
So true. I don't want to accuse anyone, but a "certain group of people" are responsible for running down communities from Detroit to Buena Vista to Benton Harbor to Flint. They just can't run it. They don't pay attention in school, they don't attempt to do anything properly. I'm from overseas, and I'm ashamed of them. I think Detroit would be much better off with a white person as the mayor. Dave Bing is quite possibly the wake-up call the city needs. If you want an African-American to run the city, he is an excellent choice. Unfortunately, who will Detroit elect after him? Granholm is the saddest governor ever. I was a little wary of her during the election, and in her first year, I was convinced she was a fool. She has no real plan. She is a diehard liberal, through and through. That's her main agenda. Michigan cannot see this though. It's a shame. She needs to be recalled. DeVos would've been a much better choice. I'm not saying that as a Republican, I'm saying it as someone that thinks Michigan needs CHANGE.

6
Like 2 penny jenny needs more crap on her plate to screw up! I,m a detroit born person, grandma lived in highland park near the old sears store,my dad had a drycleaning corperation right on woodward and rosedale, and I still go to the city for entertainment, but the people have no hope left, you can change the guard, but it's the people that make the city, I don't have a answer, it seems like just when you think their on a comeback, the bottom falls out AGAIN! How much can these people endure? City council is a joke. I wonder what would happen if L. Brooks Patterson was mayor. the residents need hope and help, I don't know of any body who can make it all come back together, Maybe the new mayor can fix it, but that's a long road. It's sad to see it decay the way it has, I remember the motown days when times were good. sorry I got lost for a bit there. Bulldoze it and start over! Great question, complicated solution!

7
I'd have to say that I don't think either option is good. 1. Detroit City Council members only care about their private agendas. Its about power & control & not whats best for business owners, attracting new clients or the people living in the city. They've made every issue personal & with a religious twist. 2. Gov. Grandholm is no better, she had overworked state FIA workers. She has taken away support from adoptive parents. She spent 500,000 on NEW license plates...wtf?! She has her own agendas. The bottom line is that the govt. is failing us in every way & there has to be a 3rd solution for things to get better.

8
legally yes,, but I do not want that to happen. With the current Govern in Office the city of Detroit will die in a flash. The only Solution is for the residents to start giving a darn and working for a living instead of off the welfare,,( i am sorry I had offend any body to is doing there best to get off the system) Another factor that is must is jobs,, with the Auto industry dying , there must be some other way to bring money to the state and the city. It was suggested a long time ago way before any of us were born that Detroit be a commercial fishing port. Also we have salt mines under the city ,, another way to make money and jobs but that is not hap pong. Another factor is education,, How may children want to builders workers or teachers when they grow up not many.

Michigan State has a horse riding program. You have your 4 years to look forward to, then after wards you could be an instructor! Keep your goals up! thanks aleechawa

Michigan State is the place to go in MI for any sort of serious collegiate studies relating to horses. SchoolCraft college has offered horse related courses in the past, though these are seminars for the general public and not degree programs for students--I am really not sure if they still have them or if they cold be counted towards undergrad credit hours. Findlay U is not too far out of MI in Ohio. As in, it wouldn't be unreasonable to drive home on weekends from time to time. Out of state tuition may be waved if you live in a county that borders Ohio-something you'd have to check in to.

what school should i go to MICHIGAN STATE OR WAYNE STATE.?

what school should i go to MICHIGAN STATE OR WAYNE STATE.?
i was wondering which school i should go to. im thinking in a career in law or medicine(primarily optometry or physical therapy) im not 100% yet. i live in detroit too, don't stress the factor that i should go to wayne state just because i live by it though i just want the better school. i'm considering all parts of the school from education to greek life to partys(even though i know that state beats it in all categories). overall gimmie the school i should go to because im applying in the fall and i need to know. if you have other school recommendations let me know im not limited to michigan im willing to go to surrounding states such as chicago or something. but primarily these two schools i guess

MSU is generally considered a better undergraduate university than WSU. Also note that law is not an area you can study in undergraduate. Law school is a graduate level program, you need a bachelors degree before you can apply. Also note if you are accepted to MSU for undergrad you are NOT accepted to the law school too. You would have to apply to that separately after earning your bachelors degree. Best of luck!!!

Since both are graduate school. It does not matter where you go undergrad. Save your money and go where you can come out with the least amount of debt. www. apta.org

I don't but I wish. It just rained here on Long Island,NY today. We have all nest week off so it doesn't matter and it's too early for a snow day though we only get one snow day a year. If we use more than we get days taken away from spring vacation. I'd rather have a day off in the spring than the winter.

I don't have a snow day, but a 2 hour delay

Can anyone tell me anything about Springwells Michigan? I think its in Detroit?
I'm interested in knowing what the area is like, is it a good place to raise children? What are the schools like? The houses? Is it a safe area or is there a high crime rate? What are the demographics? If there's anything else you can think of that you think is worth knowing about, please let me know. Thanks! I'm sorry I couldn't be more specific about the neighborhood... I'm looking around the area of Central Ave and DIX St.

My map of Detroit shows a Springwells Street on the west side of the city, about a mile in from Dearborn. I used to go by there on occasion when I lived in the Detroit area, and as long as I kept moving, things weren't too bad. From what I saw, it was about as run-down as much of the rest of the city. If you don't have to go there, don't.

2
WARNING..DANGER... No this is not a safe area, no this is not a place to raise children, yes there is a very high crime rate. The surrounding area is mostly industrial. Before I get the remarks that I don't know the city. I was raised here, went to school for a majority of my childhood and still hang out in the city and have plenty of family that still live in the city. This is an area you want to avoid. To be honest the whole Detroit school system is taking a major beating right now with 50 more schools slated to close.

Michigan Home Schooling?

Michigan Home Schooling?
Over the past week I have asked many questions on yahoo answers, it has became my source for information as many people ask and respond on it. Anyone this question may be one of the most important. I am Junior now and really trying to get serious about my education. I currently reside in Detroit and their school system is just terrible. Every year its the same drama, same problems. Even though I just started school I can tell its going to be the same. The past year Michigan closed down several DPS. All the students from that area had to go to different schools, this means a number of gangs together. So my mom asked me if I wanted to be home schooled, of course we know nothing about it and I felt it was no better place to ask then YahooAnswers. Some of the questions we asked today are; 1. How do you get started. 2. How do colleges look at your if your home schooled. 3. Where do you purchase books. I may ask some more questions as I do more research, thanks in advance everyone.

1. How do you get started. how do you get started eh...? well first you have to get books and other simple utencils and get junior grade books. 2. How do colleges look at your if your home schooled. i really cant answer this because i've never been homeschooled. 3. Where do you purchase books www.cheapbooks.com wonderful site for elementary/highschool books.

It's great that you want to take more responsibility for your education, and that you want to get out of a bad environment. Here's a link to a chart showing how to homeschool in MI: http://www.hslda.org/laws/default.asp?State=MI Here's a .pdf file that gives a current legal analysis of homeschooling in MI: http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Michigan.pdf I would also really recommend getting in touch with some homeschool groups in your area, as they will be able to give you more specific information as well as options like co op classes, social outlets, and volunteer/leadership opportunities. I'm not familiar with the Detroit metro area, but if you google "Detroit homeschool groups" you will find several links, some of which should be in your area. Colleges look very favorably on homeschooling, as long as your transcripts/records are in order (and show that you did the appropriate level of work) and your SAT/ACT scores are within their range. Many colleges and universities are actively courting homeschoolers, even giving grants and scholarships specifically for homeschool grads. Several even offer concurrent enrollment, offering you the chance to graduate high school with your Associates degree. Here is a link that gives great info about putting together a transcript. http://oklahomahomeschool.com/trans1.html And here is more info, from a homeschooling mom of multiple grads, on homeschooling high school: http://oklahomahomeschool.com/highsch.html#general You can get your books from any number of places, though I would suggest starting here (as almost everything is at a discount): http://rainbowresource.com/index.php You can send for their free catalog, it's the size of a phone book and will give you tons of choices for all levels, subjects, and learning styles. Some curricula you may want to look into: http://trisms.com/ http://www.writing-edu.com/ http://www.videotext.com/homeschool.htm http://www.sonlight.com/ There are lots more out there, of course, but these are some that I highly recommend. If you would like to go with getting everything from the same company, these are two of the top "boxed" curriculum providers: http://www.abeka.com/ http://www.bjupress.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreCatalogDisplay?storeId=10001&langId=-1&catalogId=10001 There are other options of course, but this should get you started :-) Good luck!

3
start at hslda.org know the laws of your state before you proceed! then find a curriculum colleges are recruiting home schoolers these days and are more likely to look at your ACT or SAT score more than a diploma public school or not. You can find books all over the place just google home school curriculum's and you will be overwhelmed with it. The questions you need to ask are what kind of education do you want? Do you want a Christian education or a Secular? Do you like to read a lot or would you prefer to write? are you a hands on person or can you learn well by just seeing it? For a few great programs try www.snolight.com or www.schooloftomorrow.com I've also heard a lot about Penn Foster High, Christian Liberty Press, ACE has the Lighthouse academy (the second website is ACE) I believe those are mostly on-line programs but check them out

Should I move to Detroit?

Should I move to Detroit?
I am interested in moving to Detroit, Michigan after I finish college. I am interested for four reasons; 1. Detroit has an excellent job market and Michigan has a good economy with good paying jobs. 2. Detroit has excellent mass transportation with an excellent light rail train system. 3. Detroit has an excellent public school system and is one of the best schools systems in the country. 4. Detroit has a low crime rate and is considered as one of the safest cities in America. What are some other good reasons I should consider moving to Detroit? Also, what are the advantages of moving to Detroit. P.S.: I want to live in the City of Detroit and not the metropolitan area.

3
I have been to Detroit....from my experience, I would not move there!! But that's my opinion. You asked, here's my answer - NO!

4
seriously? I live in the outskirts, detroit has gotten a lot better then it used to be but it still isnt the best place. What type of job? 1.There isnt a market for jobs. If your a teacher you have no chance what so ever. 2. The transportation isnt great and its really dirty. 3. Schools are being shut down left and right. 4. Low crime rate... really???? I don't think so. Get used to hearing sirens daily. I can send you a list of things that have gone down while i was in detroit.

5

6

7
Thats some funny $h!+ dude!!!!!!!!!

8
Yeah you should move to Detroit, Chicago has enough trolls.

9
I am wondering who told you these lies? After all, none of what you have posted is true. As a former Metropolitan Detroiter, I would suggest you not to move to Detroit and here is why; 1. Detroit has a horrible economy and Michigan has one of the worst economies in the country. 2. I lived in Metropolitan Detroit for over 20 years and I can tell you right now that Detroit does not have a light rail train system. Since you are a Charlotte Knights fan, I can assume you are from Charlotte, NC or the Charlotte Metropolitan Area and you are thinking that Detroit has a CATS Light Rail System. Detroit does not have any kind of commuter train system and I do not see one coming to Detroit any time soon. 3. Detroit does not have an excellent school system and is one of the worst in the country. In 2007, they closed down many schools because of low attendance and poor class performance. 4. Detroit has a extraordinarily high crime rate. It is in the top ten most dangerous city in the United States and the most dangerous in the State of Michigan. I am assuming that you are from the Charlotte Area and my advice to you is to stay in Charlotte. I was once considering a move there and Charlotte is a city that is growing and developing into a World Class City. Detroit is not growing and most people who live there are not happy with how life is in Detroit.

10
Ummm...you are being sarcastic right??? I mean...I honestly don't mind Detroit all that much and go up there frequently...but yeah...you'd have to be smoking something to be coming up with all of your reasons.

13
LOL Flintguy and G Detroit, I agree! and WTF Mr. Knowledgeable? Yes, move to Detroit. You better get a spot while the getting is good. When Detroit becomes the Paris of the Midwest again (as time repeats itself), people and jobs with money will want to barge in and there will be no room or demand for them

14
OK where to begin,, When the Governor Ghamlohm said you will be blown away,,, I was blown away out of the state of Michigan for these reasons, The city of Detroit Is the worst city in the state,,the city is in the red so bad that it would take 100 years to make a profit The DPS schools are the worst in the country. the dropout rate is over 70%. (5years ago I don't have newer figures ) The public transportaion sysem , what is that? Sure there are city buses that are always late, the drivers do not know how to drive, Wanye County Sheiffs ride the buses becuase of the crime on the buses. the lightrail you are thinking is the pepole mover it only goes around downtown for a mile in cirlce. the crime rate are you seroius,, the state and the city just release over 200 crimnails back on the streets due to overcrowding,,(the state wants to close serveal of the prisons down to save money,) Hookers work right across the street form the ballpark,,and there is hooker on every corner, just as the local drug dealers.. the city had laid off over 200 of it finest just before the superbowl and never re-hire any of them. There is more talk of more laid-offs of not only the police but the fire deparment and EMS. the only good thing is that you can buy a house for less 10,000 in the city due to all the home foreclsores,,

15
i heard this joke 5 million times already....come up with some new material buddy

16
The city is aslo know for it's racial harmony, and honest Mayors.

17
wow. Nice one! Funny how u think thats true! I live like 45 minutes away and go there sometimes. IT TERRIBLE and dirty. I know you don't want to move there. And your pretending and being sarcastic about it!

18
Guess you have answered your own question. With all the good things you have brought out it would be impossible to live any place else. good luck. Cheers C

While 16 is the minimum age for most nonfarm work, minors aged 14 and 15 may work outside of school hours in certain occupations under certain conditions. Minors may, at any age: deliver newspapers; perform in radio, television, movies, or theatrical productions; work for their parents in their solely owned nonfarm businesses (except in mining, manufacturing, or in any other occupation declared hazardous by the Secretary); or gather evergreens and make evergreen wreaths.

How to find a job in Detroit, Michigan?

How to find a job in Detroit, Michigan?
Help! I am a college graduate (double major: theatre tech and art), great verbal and written communication skills, know photoshop like the back of my hand, artistically inclined, great sales and people person and I cannot find a job to save my life. I am currently working as a server in a restaurant but that's not even paying the bills because of the crap economy. I have a great work ethic and am not afraid of a little hard work. I have scoured the major job internet job sites and sent out countless resumes for graphic design and web design positions which has all been to no avail. I am desperate for something... anything!!! I am planning on returning for graduate school within the next 1-2 years but I have some serious matters going down on the homefront and I can't leave. WHAT TO DO?!? Does anyone know of any company looking for an intelligent, motivated, driven young professional for an entry level position in the Detroit area? I am a fast learner! p.s. I am no longer restricting my job search to include graphic/web design positions. Something! Anything! pref. decent pay with bennies.

Sorry I can't help you, It Is very hard out here in Michigan we are thinking of moving away. I'm 46 born and raised here but we are losing every thing! My Nephew got his teaching degree and has been looking for a job for 1 year now, he is looking to move away too. My son in law has been designing part for one of the big 3 for 12 years now making a lot of money. His Co. is now laying of people and his hr. have been cut so bad their starting to lose things. Good Luck don't give up and maybe keep Other state's in mind.

when you find on let me know b/c i am in the same situation. Good luck

3
I cant help. When you go to grad school I would try to get a business degree. Many companies want a well rounded employee. Understanding business is key to working in a Business. Good Luck to you.

4
My place of employment is hiring right now. Too bad I can't give out any info that might lead to my true Identity. Try Gardner White Furniture, Taylor or Canton. They will hire anybody.

5
Sign up for the Michigan Talent Bank at MichiganWorks.com. You'll be asked to compile a list of employment fields you are interested in working in and want to receive information on. They will send you a daily e-mail digest listing job postings from companies that have positions open related to the fields you previously selected. They will range from entry level/hourly to professional salaried positions. The e-mail digests are usually several pages long and should provide you with many options. For any positions you are interested in I would recommend reaching the listed contact by phone or e-mail, and not using the website's "Send Resume" option. I signed up with MichiganWorks in 2005 and landed a nice job at Ford Motor Company that helped me pay my way through college.

6
Send your resume to every ad agency, PR house, Kraft Foods, Sarah Lee, etc IN CHICAGO and get the heck away from Detroit. If you REALLY have to stay in Detroit, see if Kelly Services can get you into a decent temp-to-hire position. It's the only way to get a decent job right now.

Why did Socialism destroy Detroit Michigan?

Why did Socialism destroy Detroit Michigan?
30 years ago Detroit was a great city, since they adopted Socialist political govt the city looks now like a 3rd world nation. Only 30% of H.School kids graduate, 50% of the population is on welfare. Now we have these same policies taking over the country? WOW! We are looking at a rough rough road ahead of us! Pray they lose power in 2010!!! Or the entire country will look like Detroit! They have more crime, more poverty and no jobs so people will vote for Progressives- thats the liberal stragedy to keep power, they use people. Its so bad in Detroit, the population is 1/2 of what it was a decade ago. The homes are so run down and torn up by theives they plan to someday to just tear it all down- it looks like a 3rd world country! Like Venezuela there! Its gross! Average College Student- WOWY! One of the best economies? Im in shock! I hope your not an average college student really because your not learning any facts! Frightening!

Detroit was a one industry town when all the car companies shut down or moved there was no more jobs and all the jobs that were there to sell the auto workers things left too

2
We all may as well join the ObamaNation and embrace socialism, it is being shoved down our throats. If you cant' beat them, join them and stop working so damn hard. No job, give me food , shelter and a paycheck, please.

3
thirty years ago would have been during the Reagan Administration, they were Socialists, too? wow, and here I thought Reagan was a Capitalist

4
Detroit needs more immigrants.

5
It didnt destroy it. Detroit has one of the best potential economies in the nation. Good for investment.

6
Socialism always leads to Detroit. Most major cities in communist countries looked like Detroit does now. It used to be a beautiful city when I was young...now it's a ghost town.

7
Tisk, tisk. You really are naive and don't understand what real socialism is, do you? Detroit has become a ghost town because the car industry is drying up. Or did you not get the memo on this happening? Donna

8
You really need to learn what socialism is.

9
Socialism will come to this country under the veil of compassion.

10
Actually, it would be globalization--which socialist platforms strongly dislike--that killed a manufacturing economy in Detroit.

11
Detroit is part of the United States. It is capitalist. Thus, capitalism destroyed Detroit. There is nothing about Detroit's system of government or economy that is socialist. If it was socialist, the government would be providing jobs, jobs training, and doing more to prevent big business from leaving Detroit. But, we are capitalist. Capitalism is great, but doesn't work perfectly.

12
It looks like Magnitorgorsk, Russia circa 1979

13
You want failed socialism, just look a Greece, that is what happens under socialism. 1 out of 4 people work for the government there, hmmm, can't imagine why that didn't work out.

14
I lived in the Detroit area 30 years ago. It was no great city. It was a giant ghetto even then (it was the murder capital of the world even then). The days of Detroit's greatness are near 40-50 years back now. Most of Detroit's problems stem from racial conflicts in the state. Long ago white flight left Detroit in a bad way, the leadership in Detroit was then replaced by black leaders that took out their frustrations on business and the people of that area, and the state of Michigan simply let them sink into those problems (wanting nothing to do with the city). Ask people from that area...its no secret. At this point it's basically a old run down war zone...and no one, at all, wants much of anything to do with the city. Socialism, capitalism, whatever....its not coming back.

15
Capitalism killed Detroit The car industry made people in the area relatively rich, they moved out of the city to the suburbs. When the car industry died after you started buying cheap imports, everything died. More money into social programs would have held the city up

16
Not just Detroit. Every major city where Democrats have governed over time suffers from the highest crime, unemployment, and poverty levels. Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961; Buffalo, NY (2ND) hasn't elected one since 1954; Cincinnati, OH (3rd)... since 1984; Cleveland, OH (4Th)... since 1989; Miami, FL (5Th) has never had a Republican Mayor; St. Louis, MO (6Th).... since 1949; El Paso, TX (7Th) has never had a Republican Mayor; Milwaukee, WI (8Th)... since 1908; Philadelphia, PA (9Th)... since 1952; Newark, NJ(10Th)... since 1907.

17
Umm, the closure of factories by the auto industry is caused by socialism? Try a narrow economic base. If a city depends on one major industry for employment, there is a risk that a downturn will result in labor being laid off without any alternative industry picking up the surplus. This dependence on the auto industry dates back to the early 20th Century and is a by-product of regional specialization caused by the free market.

18
If you want to blame an economic model for Detroit’s failure blame capitalism. Capitalism says that the companies are allowed to do whatever they want in order to increase revenues. Detroit’s primary market is in the automobile industry and in order to maximize revenues the auto industry started to outsource their labor to foreign markets, therefore leaving tons of workers unemployed. Because workers did not want to be abuse like the way we abuse people in third world countries they created an union, however given our current capitalist economic structure it didn’t work out well because people are greedy the worse parasites that have walked on Earth.

19
About 50 years ago, most of the cars manufactured in the world were built either in or around Detroit, now most of the cars manufactured in the world are built outside the United States. With that decline in manufacturing in the Detroit area, came the decline in jobs, and the loss of population as the people who could moved away to try and find jobs elsewhere. The people who remain in Detroit are the ones who are now stuck there, they lack the means to go anywhere else. The decrease in jobs and population, meant a decrease in tax revenue for the city, to the point where it can barely afford to maintain it's infrastructure, and emergency services. So, exactly how did Socialism cause this?

20
Socialism killed Detroit because when the government gives out money to people who don't work, that kills others ambitions to actually work. The government teaches the people that they don't have to go and get a real job, the government will take care of them. A real sticking point here is that the government doesn't have any money, the government only takes money from those that actually have an income from a real job. So after a while they finally run out of money or they go into debt by borrowing money. The real problem with Detroit is the fact that government stepped in and made Detroit make cars that no one really wanted. In 1998 you could buy a Diesel Suburban, put a turbocharger on it and get 30 miles a gallon. Just last night I saw an advertisement for a small car that was supposed to get 28 miles to the gallon. New 2010 small car gets 28 miles to the gallon, '98 GMC Diesel Suburban got 30 miles to the gallon. Wow we have come so far. And Detroit is set for the housing market to rebound, right now you can buy a house there for under $1.00. Hundreds of houses on the market, but no one will even buy them because there is no jobs there. Michigan as a whole has lost over 2 million jobs, and the Governor there is bragging about how they will create 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. 2 million out of work applying for 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years, what are your chances of getting a job, pretty slim.
