How to find a job in Detroit, Michigan?
Help! I am a college graduate (double major: theatre tech and art), great verbal and written communication skills, know photoshop like the back of my hand, artistically inclined, great sales and people person and I cannot find a job to save my life. I am currently working as a server in a restaurant but that's not even paying the bills because of the crap economy. I have a great work ethic and am not afraid of a little hard work. I have scoured the major job internet job sites and sent out countless resumes for graphic design and web design positions which has all been to no avail. I am desperate for something... anything!!! I am planning on returning for graduate school within the next 1-2 years but I have some serious matters going down on the homefront and I can't leave. WHAT TO DO?!? Does anyone know of any company looking for an intelligent, motivated, driven young professional for an entry level position in the Detroit area? I am a fast learner! p.s. I am no longer restricting my job search to include graphic/web design positions. Something! Anything! pref. decent pay with bennies.

Sorry I can't help you, It Is very hard out here in Michigan we are thinking of moving away. I'm 46 born and raised here but we are losing every thing! My Nephew got his teaching degree and has been looking for a job for 1 year now, he is looking to move away too. My son in law has been designing part for one of the big 3 for 12 years now making a lot of money. His Co. is now laying of people and his hr. have been cut so bad their starting to lose things. Good Luck don't give up and maybe keep Other state's in mind.

30 years ago Detroit was a great city, since they adopted Socialist political govt the city looks now like a 3rd world nation. Only 30% of H.School kids graduate, 50% of the population is on welfare. Now we have these same policies taking over the country? WOW! We are looking at a rough rough road ahead of us! Pray they lose power in 2010!!! Or the entire country will look like Detroit! They have more crime, more poverty and no jobs so people will vote for Progressives- thats the liberal stragedy to keep power, they use people. Its so bad in Detroit, the population is 1/2 of what it was a decade ago. The homes are so run down and torn up by theives they plan to someday to just tear it all down- it looks like a 3rd world country! Like Venezuela there! Its gross! Average College Student- WOWY! One of the best economies? Im in shock! I hope your not an average college student really because your not learning any facts! Frightening!

If it was socialist, the government would be providing jobs, jobs training, and doing more to prevent big business from leaving Detroit. But, we are capitalist. I lived in the Detroit area 30 years ago. It was no great city. It was a giant ghetto even then (it was the murder capital of the world even then). The days of Detroit's greatness are near 40-50 years back now. Most of Detroit's problems stem from racial conflicts in the state. Long ago white flight left Detroit in a bad way, the leadership in Detroit was then replaced by black leaders that took out their frustrations on business and the people of that area, and the state of Michigan simply let them sink into those problems (wanting nothing to do with the city). Ask people from that area...its no secret. At this point it's basically a old run down war zone...and no one, at all, wants much of anything to do with the city. Socialism, capitalism, whatever....its not coming back.

The real problem with Detroit is the fact that government stepped in and made Detroit make cars that no one really wanted. In 1998 you could buy a Diesel Suburban, put a turbocharger on it and get 30 miles a gallon. Just last night I saw an advertisement for a small car that was supposed to get 28 miles to the gallon. New 2010 small car gets 28 miles to the gallon, '98 GMC Diesel Suburban got 30 miles to the gallon. Wow we have come so far. And Detroit is set for the housing market to rebound, right now you can buy a house there for under $1.00. Hundreds of houses on the market, but no one will even buy them because there is no jobs there. Michigan as a whole has lost over 2 million jobs, and the Governor there is bragging about how they will create 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. 2 million out of work applying for 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years, what are your chances of getting a job, pretty slim.

Snow day tomorow?in southeast michigan?
Well, I live near detroit,michigan and my school district is open on martin luther king day.The tempurature tonight is supposed to be -1 degrees with wind chill -10 to -20 will we have a snow day due to the cold weather? I live in Northville,Michigan and we don't celebrate mlk day.

From rural Central Mich. Near Cadillac. Call your school's office, they may have a recording about school closings. Call your local TV stations. Schools usually close because of snow not temp. It's -11 here and schools will not close.
