CNN said 50% of high school kids dropped out in Detroit Michigan, what needs to be done?
The churches and people with money like Oprah should volunteer their time and money to fix this problems. This is terrible. I am helping my own children past school right now. EVERY NIGHT making sure they do their homework, so I was hoping people that don't have children and/or more money than me. Give their time and money. I use all my time EVERY NIGHT making sure my own children do their homework and study. It's a full time job besides my working job. I want the best for my children. It's starts in the home. So if there's no home life, maybe the people that have the time and money could help.

Why just them? How about you too?

2
Money isn't the answer, volunteering will help. Start voting conservative in Michigan.

3
For starters, the parents and the principals / teachers who allow these kids to drop out - need to be penalized harshly in some way! And the kids who drop out should be required to do hard labor - until they return to school to graduate. Plus the liberal mentality in Detroit needs to change and be replaced with more Republicans!

4
whats even more terrible is that youre relying on CNN for news.

5
There needs to be more focus on why obtaining a high school diploma and continuing your education is beneficial in the long run. I bet those 50% of students who dropped out of high school probably are looking back and regretting that decision since many of them are probably at low paying menial jobs and barely getting by.

6
In Baltimore, 75% of black males never finish high school. The main reason is, parents don't get involved. Sometimes, you will see some 11th hour crying by parents of failing students, but it is too late when the kid is in 8th grade and can barely read or add. What needs to be done is this: forget all this Political Correctness nonsense. Forget about the whiners who complain about "under funding". It's all nonsense. Education does not need to be expensive. My dad went to the proverbial one-room school house in rural Wisconsin, and he was accepted into a prestigious High School in Chicago. Poor discipline is the main reason teachers can't teach. They are spending all their time just trying to keep order. The students don't respect the teacher because the teacher has no ability to really lay down the law. We must change that. Here's the solution: allow schools to go back to the days when discipline was maintained. If that means making kids stand in the corner, or spanking them, fine. It's the only way some of these schools will be able to function; the alternative is chaos. Bring in some teachers from Eastern Europe and have them teach how they maintain discipline. Here in Prague (Czech Republic) kids wouldn't DARE interrupt, goof off, be violent, or anything else that is commonplace in U.S. schools. Hence, kids here learn faster and much better.

7
Step one is to stick in a mayor that somewhere around less than 98% corrupt. The city can't afford to allow money to be thrown around in the wind. I don't know what step two would be. Detroit is in sad shape. It's partly because of decades of poor managing of the city, so I doubt anything can change it quickly. And I'm still not willing to let parents off the hook. Parents have a huge amount of influence on how their kids and their kids' kids grow up and lead their lives. How do you force people to be good responsible parents though?

8
stop supporting these people with programs like welfare when they don't want to do anything for themselves.

9
I think a lot of it has to start at home. The parents should be teaching their children from a very young age how important it is to get an education, about drugs and how to say no, teaching them about sex and the consequences of not using safe sex, how not to let the people they hang with influence their good judgment. The government can only do so much, if the child is not being taught these things in the home, there's not much anyone can do. I hear the blame for our children's actions being blamed on the schools, teachers, friends, government, everyone except the ones that need to start the process of teaching them what they need and should know, THE PARENTS.

10
Put 'em in the Army.

11
The education system needs to be examined. It obviously does not hold the attention of Black children. They are finding it very boring. Black people need to take an interest and fix this problem. God won't change the condition of a people until they first take a step toward change. God helps those who help themselves.

12
When you have a culture that has sperm donors instead of fathers, these are the results you get. Detroit has been handed everything since 1974 and here it is 33 years later and they are worse off now then they were then. What has changed? The number of social programs have done nothing but increase, right along with taxes. The crime has always been there, so that has not changed. Detroit is 90%+ black population. It needs to look to itself to see the problem and quit looking for someone to fix it for them. Each mayor has been more crooked than the last since Cole Young. Get off the welfare train, and make something of that once great city on the river. There is nobody that can convince me that Detroit cannot turn around and become a great city again. The brains are out there.

13
Oprah has given thousands of scholarships here in the US. Jay Leno also supports education with his own scholarships as do many others. Bill and Melinda Gates build small high schools, where students can get more attention from adults there. They have invested heavily into education. It's not just in Detroit.. it's nationwide. CNN also reports that every 7 minutes, a 14 year old gets pregnant. But we have people here who keep on insisting what a "miracle " a baby is. No miracle when that mother becomes a drop out dependent on the government and that child becomes the victim of abuse... and the cycle repeats itself. Schools are set up to fail. They still insist on teaching the same way they did in the 50's and 60's. Teachers see that and bail from the profession. Anyone can walk into a classroom now and teach. States only recently started background checks. Every Congressman has his/her kids in private schools. So, how important do you think education really is in this country?

14
I can see many possible reasons for the dropout rate in this country and especially in Detroit. They have lost so many jobs in that area and so many small businesses are closing their doors. Some families have become dependent on their children's help supporting the household by working parttime jobs because all they have any more are low paying jobs to look forward to and rising cost of everything else. The "No Child Left Behind" program is one of the worst ideas that could have been established creating an atmosphere of learning a boring test over and over again instead of learning content for subjects. The Federal Governments interaction with the school system has caused courses that would have helped kids get good jobs once they were out of school to be eliminated. Courses such as computer programming, welding, plumbing, auto mechanics, drafting have been done away with due to budget cuts. And then there are just kids with no hope finding drugs as a way to dampen the pain of reality that the American Dream is not as obtainable as was once believed.

Its hard for parents to work 12 hours a day just to make ends meet and then try to do homework as well, most of these parents probably dont know how to do algebra, ect in the first place, thats why we pay taxes and send kids to school.Arent the teachers getting paid to teach? I feel it is the teachers responsibility. In my opinion if they cant teach the kids, that shows a lack of responsibility on their part. When we let illegals into our schools, and had the no child left behind crap that is when the worst of the problems started.> Cheap Labor Cheap Tomatoes . .. . Even though it means losing 3 points it might be better to delete this question and consider reposting it with different wording than give the points to someone who does not answer it thus encouraging people to post non-answers.

acting schools do not make you an actress, being in plays and films does. Find plays to be in at school and in the community.

Well, there is a REALLY expensive arts high school called Interlochen. It is amazing and it is one of my dreams to go there but it is super expensive. (like 38,000 per year) but you can get scholarships. UOM is pretty good musical theatre but they only take like 50 or so kids a year.

Athletics: Detroit Catholic Central. Six state championships last year. I don't believe Father Gabriel Richard had any. Academics: Both are top notch. DCC consistently has ten or more National Merit Finalists. FGR was listed as one of the top 50 Catholic schools in the country by Catholic High School Honor Roll. Finding a date in class: Head to FGR. There are only men at DCC. But girls looking for a great guy should head to Detroit Catholic Central. Overall: Catholic Central, hands down. But both are really great schools.

All public schools are required to provide appropriate education for all students with disabilities. This is what special education is. If a school does not, parents have a variety of legal options available to promptly force the school/school district to provide appropriate service delivery. Again, these legal options are because the student would be enrolled in special education. A school cannot choose to provide appropriate services for your son. It is federally required that al public schools do this. They must comply

the same as southfield same as oak park same as the other places SEPTEMBER 4th!!!!

5
B this is a trick question, LOL and I too am not sure what it has to do with travel but here is the answer By Michigan state law, the official start date for all Michigan schools is 9/4/07 (yearly that would be the day after Labor Day) however there is an exception to that for school districts which had contracts with staff already in place prior to 2004 which established the school start date as some time in August. I do believe by 2010 all of the Michigan districts will be back on track to start the day after Labor day. This was done to increase tourism within the state and surrounding areas. They discovered that families were going on vacation around the holiday and 75% of students were not making it to school prior to the holiday anyway so it was ridicoulous to have them come back so early. This was especially true in Michigan because of the nature of our weather. I hope this helps

6
In Response to Diamond--Mybe the poster was asking because they were relocating and they wanted their child to start school in Detroit on the right begin date. Not every city or state begins on Sept. 4th, Here in the Tennessee, we start July or August, and even districts in Michigan do not all start Sept. 4, so before you cop an attitude, check your facts!

7
I live in michigan and its starts on the day after labor day!

I don't live there but if I was to come to your town today and I wanted to go to a school that teaches people to become electricians, my very first call would be to the local electricians union hall they can tell you, and it is a better bet than going some where that they aren't going to give any credence to.
