Why did Socialism destroy Detroit Michigan?

Why did Socialism destroy Detroit Michigan?
30 years ago Detroit was a great city, since they adopted Socialist political govt the city looks now like a 3rd world nation. Only 30% of H.School kids graduate, 50% of the population is on welfare. Now we have these same policies taking over the country? WOW! We are looking at a rough rough road ahead of us! Pray they lose power in 2010!!! Or the entire country will look like Detroit! They have more crime, more poverty and no jobs so people will vote for Progressives- thats the liberal stragedy to keep power, they use people. Its so bad in Detroit, the population is 1/2 of what it was a decade ago. The homes are so run down and torn up by theives they plan to someday to just tear it all down- it looks like a 3rd world country! Like Venezuela there! Its gross! Average College Student- WOWY! One of the best economies? Im in shock! I hope your not an average college student really because your not learning any facts! Frightening!

Detroit was a one industry town when all the car companies shut down or moved there was no more jobs and all the jobs that were there to sell the auto workers things left too

We all may as well join the ObamaNation and embrace socialism, it is being shoved down our throats. If you cant' beat them, join them and stop working so damn hard. No job, give me food , shelter and a paycheck, please.

3
thirty years ago would have been during the Reagan Administration, they were Socialists, too? wow, and here I thought Reagan was a Capitalist

4
Detroit needs more immigrants.

5
It didnt destroy it. Detroit has one of the best potential economies in the nation. Good for investment.

6
Socialism always leads to Detroit. Most major cities in communist countries looked like Detroit does now. It used to be a beautiful city when I was young...now it's a ghost town.

7
Tisk, tisk. You really are naive and don't understand what real socialism is, do you? Detroit has become a ghost town because the car industry is drying up. Or did you not get the memo on this happening? Donna

8
You really need to learn what socialism is.

9
Socialism will come to this country under the veil of compassion.

10
Actually, it would be globalization--which socialist platforms strongly dislike--that killed a manufacturing economy in Detroit.

Detroit is part of the United States. It is capitalist. Thus, capitalism destroyed Detroit. There is nothing about Detroit's system of government or economy that is socialist. If it was socialist, the government would be providing jobs, jobs training, and doing more to prevent big business from leaving Detroit. But, we are capitalist. Capitalism is great, but doesn't work perfectly.

It looks like Magnitorgorsk, Russia circa 1979

You want failed socialism, just look a Greece, that is what happens under socialism. 1 out of 4 people work for the government there, hmmm, can't imagine why that didn't work out.

I lived in the Detroit area 30 years ago. It was no great city. It was a giant ghetto even then (it was the murder capital of the world even then). The days of Detroit's greatness are near 40-50 years back now. Most of Detroit's problems stem from racial conflicts in the state. Long ago white flight left Detroit in a bad way, the leadership in Detroit was then replaced by black leaders that took out their frustrations on business and the people of that area, and the state of Michigan simply let them sink into those problems (wanting nothing to do with the city). Ask people from that area...its no secret. At this point it's basically a old run down war zone...and no one, at all, wants much of anything to do with the city. Socialism, capitalism, whatever....its not coming back.

Capitalism killed Detroit The car industry made people in the area relatively rich, they moved out of the city to the suburbs. When the car industry died after you started buying cheap imports, everything died. More money into social programs would have held the city up

Not just Detroit. Every major city where Democrats have governed over time suffers from the highest crime, unemployment, and poverty levels. Detroit, MI (1st on the poverty rate list) hasn't elected a Republican mayor since 1961; Buffalo, NY (2ND) hasn't elected one since 1954; Cincinnati, OH (3rd)... since 1984; Cleveland, OH (4Th)... since 1989; Miami, FL (5Th) has never had a Republican Mayor; St. Louis, MO (6Th).... since 1949; El Paso, TX (7Th) has never had a Republican Mayor; Milwaukee, WI (8Th)... since 1908; Philadelphia, PA (9Th)... since 1952; Newark, NJ(10Th)... since 1907.

Umm, the closure of factories by the auto industry is caused by socialism? Try a narrow economic base. If a city depends on one major industry for employment, there is a risk that a downturn will result in labor being laid off without any alternative industry picking up the surplus. This dependence on the auto industry dates back to the early 20th Century and is a by-product of regional specialization caused by the free market.

If you want to blame an economic model for Detroit’s failure blame capitalism. Capitalism says that the companies are allowed to do whatever they want in order to increase revenues. Detroit’s primary market is in the automobile industry and in order to maximize revenues the auto industry started to outsource their labor to foreign markets, therefore leaving tons of workers unemployed. Because workers did not want to be abuse like the way we abuse people in third world countries they created an union, however given our current capitalist economic structure it didn’t work out well because people are greedy the worse parasites that have walked on Earth.

About 50 years ago, most of the cars manufactured in the world were built either in or around Detroit, now most of the cars manufactured in the world are built outside the United States. With that decline in manufacturing in the Detroit area, came the decline in jobs, and the loss of population as the people who could moved away to try and find jobs elsewhere. The people who remain in Detroit are the ones who are now stuck there, they lack the means to go anywhere else. The decrease in jobs and population, meant a decrease in tax revenue for the city, to the point where it can barely afford to maintain it's infrastructure, and emergency services. So, exactly how did Socialism cause this?

Socialism killed Detroit because when the government gives out money to people who don't work, that kills others ambitions to actually work. The government teaches the people that they don't have to go and get a real job, the government will take care of them. A real sticking point here is that the government doesn't have any money, the government only takes money from those that actually have an income from a real job. So after a while they finally run out of money or they go into debt by borrowing money. The real problem with Detroit is the fact that government stepped in and made Detroit make cars that no one really wanted. In 1998 you could buy a Diesel Suburban, put a turbocharger on it and get 30 miles a gallon. Just last night I saw an advertisement for a small car that was supposed to get 28 miles to the gallon. New 2010 small car gets 28 miles to the gallon, '98 GMC Diesel Suburban got 30 miles to the gallon. Wow we have come so far. And Detroit is set for the housing market to rebound, right now you can buy a house there for under $1.00. Hundreds of houses on the market, but no one will even buy them because there is no jobs there. Michigan as a whole has lost over 2 million jobs, and the Governor there is bragging about how they will create 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years. 2 million out of work applying for 40,000 new jobs over the next 10 years, what are your chances of getting a job, pretty slim.
